Lead STEAM Instructor (Part-Time | Afternoons & Occasional Weekends)

Pay Rate: $19–$24 per hour (based on experience)

About TechTurnUp:

Tech Turn Up is a mission-driven nonprofit organization focused on bridging the digital divide and empowering youth through hands-on STEAM education. We serve students across Washington, DC, Maryland, and Virginia through after-school programs, in-school residencies, hackathons, workshops, and community-based learning experiences.

Our approach blends technology, art, design thinking, and real-world problem solving to help students build confidence, creativity, and future-ready skills, especially students from historically underrepresented and underserved communities.

Position Overview:

We are seeking an enthusiastic, reliable, and experienced Lead and support STEAM Instructor to support our after-school and enrichment programs for students in grades 3–12.

This is a less-than-part-time, in-person role, ideal for educators, creatives, technologists, graduate students, or early-career professionals who want meaningful teaching experience while maintaining other commitments.

As a Lead STEAM Instructor, you will facilitate engaging, project-based lessons using pre-developed Tech Turn Up curriculum, support student teams, and collaborate with assistant instructors and volunteers to create a safe, inclusive, and inspiring learning environment.

Key Responsibilities:

Instruction & Facilitation

  • Lead and co-lead hands-on STEAM sessions using Tech Turn Up curriculum

  • Facilitate project-based learning in areas such as coding, robotics, design thinking, digital media, and creative technology

  • Support students as they brainstorm, prototype, test, and present ideas

Student Engagement

  • Foster a positive, inclusive, and respectful classroom culture

  • Encourage creativity, collaboration, and problem-solving

  • Adapt instruction to meet the needs of diverse learners

Program Support

  • Work closely with assistant instructors, volunteers, and site staff

  • Maintain clear communication with program leadership

  • Support setup, cleanup, and responsible use of program materials and technology

Safety & Professionalism

  • Supervise students during program hours

  • Follow all site policies, safety procedures, and attendance protocols

  • Arrive on time, prepared, and ready to lead

Qualifications

Required

  • Experience working with K–12 or youth populations (formal or informal settings)

  • Comfort leading small groups and managing a classroom or workshop environment

  • Interest in STEAM, creative technology, or youth development

  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills

  • Reliable transportation within the DMV region

Preferred (not required)

  • Experience with tools such as Scratch, basic coding platforms, robotics kits, or design thinking activities

  • Teaching, mentoring, or facilitation experience

  • Background in education, technology, art/design, engineering, or media

  • CPR/First Aid certification (or willingness to obtain)

  • Bilingual or multilingual skills

Schedule

  • Primary: Tuesdays & Thursdays, 4:00 PM – 7:00 PM

  • Occasional: Fridays, weekends, or special events (hackathons, trainings, showcases)

  • Exact schedule may vary by site and season
